Dreamkid – Street Lights

For Street Lights, Dreamkid and I wanted to capture a little of what growing up in the 80s felt like — long summer evenings, riding bikes without a care in the world, and spending every spare minute outside with your friends.

We initially looked at casting actors for the video, but nothing quite felt right. I kept finding myself comparing them to my friends’ kids, who had exactly the energy and authenticity we were looking for. So instead, I simply asked some friends and their children if they’d like to be involved.

They loved both the track and the idea, and were completely up for it.

After gathering together a few props — including some classic BMX bikes — we spent an afternoon running around Muswell Hill and Alexandra Park capturing those moments of freedom and adventure that seemed to define childhood for so many of us.

Those scenes were then combined with a performance piece of Ryan that we had filmed a few days earlier, bringing together the nostalgia of the story with the energy of the track.

I directed and shot the video, with editing by Ryan Morris.

I think we managed to capture a little bit of that 80s magic (like you get from watching Stranger Things or Goonies) and, if I’m honest, it makes me want to stop growing up.
