Dreamkid – Apocalyptic Love Song

Dreamkid has just released Apocalyptic Love Song, the first single from his upcoming album, and once again I had the pleasure of directing and shooting the music video.

I always enjoy working with Ryan because we’re very similar creatively — neither of us are particularly good at switching off once an idea starts forming.

The original plan was to shoot the video somewhere in the deserts of California or Nevada to match the scale and atmosphere we had in mind. With Ryan in the middle of the US visa process though, travelling wasn’t an option and waiting wasn’t really on the cards either. The music was ready and it was time to move.

So the challenge became simple: how do we create that feeling without actually being there?

The answer came unexpectedly during a bike ride through East Sussex when I stumbled across a location that immediately felt right for the project. From there we started pulling together props, textures and visual elements to build our own version of that world, while keeping one eye firmly on the weather forecast and hoping the wind would play ball on the day.

Sometimes limitations force better ideas, and this was one of those projects where the constraints became part of the creative process.

As with our previous work together, I directed and shot the video, with editing handled by Ryan Morris.
